AUTISM

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorders include a wide variety of levels of symptoms. Many individuals diagnosed with Autism are high functioning (previously known as Asperger's Syndrome) and often go undetected until later in their development. Many parents recognize that something about their child is "not quite right." Many high functioning children with Autism are highly intelligent and can get by with their knowledge of what is expected in certain situations. However, these children typically have less interest in peers, have difficulty obtaining and maintaining friendships, have difficulty conversing about subjects that are not of their particular interest, are socially awkward and/or have difficulty understanding and processing emotions in themselves and others. These are signs that an individual may be on the Autism Spectrum.

This neurodevelopmental evaluation specifically targets symptoms associated with Autism Spectrum Disorders, including persistent impairment in reciprocal social communication and social interaction, and restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities (APA, 2013). An autism evaluation includes an extensive clinical interview (ADI-R), consultation/interview with childhood physician, consultation/interview with current teacher, comprehensive intelligence testing (WISC-V), independent functioning assessment, and social communication assessment (ADOS-2).

Also included in this evaluation is a comprehensive report with explanation of test results, accurate diagnosis, recommendations for academic, home and therapeutic environments, and appropriate referrals. Parents should expect to spend approximately 3 hours for the intake interview, up to 4 hours of child/adolescent testing and 1-2 hours for the feedback session. During the feedback session parents are invited to meet with the evaluator to review testing results, discuss recommendations and ask questions. A physical copy of the report will be provided to the parents at the feedback session.
